Project Description
What should happen to leftover food? How do we use our phones to save food surplus?
The international team of the Savingfood project is working on the answer. Over the past two years, Savingfood partners have been working to develop a phone and computer application where food surplus finds owners and transport, on an interface that is easy to use and accessible to all participants in the process.
Where can food surplus be generated that can be distributed with the Savingfood application? For example, in shops, bakeries, restaurants and at events. The application will also help save vegetables and fruits left in fields and orchards during harvest, which require enthusiastic volunteer hands for collection.
Where does the food go? According to our plans, the Savingfood tool also helps the donor find the appropriate receiving charitable organization based on their geographical location, activity and other characteristics. From here, the food naturally goes to those in need.
How does the food get from the donor to the recipient? Volunteers can also log in to the platform, who we count on, among other things, for food transportation. Volunteers can, among other things, determine their own transport capacity, preferred routes and the time they have for this, and with the help of the tool, they can participate in food rescue according to their own possibilities.
Who are those who use the Savingfood tool? The project launched in January 2016 is coordinated by the Greek ViLabs, and the consortium members are Boroume, IT Innovation, Hungarian Food Bank Association, FiLab, Feedback, and iMinds.
During the project, we are testing the developed tool, for which we are looking for applicants from all three participant groups (donors, charitable organizations, and volunteers).
