Together we nourished hope

The time and energy invested by the helpers fortunately paid off abundantly, as the campaign ended with a total result of 244 tons, so in the coming weeks 49 thousand people in need can benefit from our support packages.

“We would like to thank all donors, the retail chains that provide a place for our cooperation and their employees, as well as our dedicated volunteers. Together, in the literal sense of the word, we can nourish hope. From the collected donations, elderly people, large families and single-parent households, residents of children’s homes, as well as people with disabilities and people living in the most backward settlements in the country will also benefit – said András Nagygyörgy, director responsible for external relations of the Food Bank.

The donation enthusiasm defeated the stocks

After years of dominance, this weekend it was not flour that was the most frequently donated product, but pasta, of which a total of 53 thousand kilograms arrived. This number could have been even higher, but there were stores where the stocks simply ran out by Saturday afternoon, the product practically disappeared from the shelves – the donation enthusiasm won.

Rice stepped onto the imaginary podium second place, and to our great joy, a lot of donations also came from canned goods and pasta sauces. With the latter, the large quantities of side dishes offered can easily be rounded into full meals. Many donors also thought about the upcoming Children’s Day, as more than 28 tons of sweets and baby food were collected.

The territorial distribution of the offers also shows interesting features. Budapest and Pest county stand out again from the rankings, which is not surprising, since there are significantly more stores here. The next five places on the list are Veszprém, Fejér, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Somogy and Baranya counties – all from the western part of the country, which does not necessarily match the pattern of similar collections in recent years.

The Food Bank helps in everyday life too

The Food Bank will prepare a total of 48,881 packages from the goods collected over the weekend, which will be received by those in need living near the individual stores in the coming weeks. Beneficiaries can expect not only one-time support, as we also help the needy by rescuing and donating products with near-expiry dates and packaging defects in everyday life.

On average, we can collect 30 thousand kilograms of food surplus daily from stores, manufacturers and catering establishments, which we distribute throughout the country primarily with the cooperation of volunteers and local charitable organizations. Our goal is to provide support to at least a quarter of a million people this year as well, to which anyone can contribute in the coming days by offering their personal income tax.

The Food Bank helps in everyday life too

• The food collection took place in a total of 410 stores in 202 settlements in the country, with the participation of 5,500 volunteers
• The total value of the donations exceeded 288 million forints. 244,303 kilograms of donations were collected, which means 254 kilograms of donations in every single minute of the two-day action.
• The most frequently donated product was pasta. This product category was followed by rice, flour, canned goods and sugar.
• The Food Bank will prepare a total of 48,881 support packages from the goods collected over the weekend.
